Perforated GAIL Pipeline Catches Fire In South Delhi

A major fire broke out at GAIL's natural gas pipeline around 9:45 AM today in the Moti Bagh area in Delhi. This pipe line carries gas to consumers like Maruti Udyog.

The gas pipeline caught fire after it was perforated by civic construction contractors. Nearly a dozen fire fighters worked hard for around an hour to get the flames extinguished around 11 in the morning.

Chairman and managing director of GAIL India Ltd. BC Tripathi said, "We shut gas flow at both ends of the pipeline and brought the fire under control."

An elevated corridor was being constructed by the Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) workers. The workers perforated the gas pipeline while using a drill machine. All the workers of the HCC fled the area after the incident; the leaked gas spread in a small area and caught fire because of a spark.

"The incident occurred due to a third party drilling activity without prior permission taken by the agency from GAIL, in spite of the pipeline warning markers located in close proximity to the site," GAIL released a official statement.

An FIR has already been lodged.

No causalities have been reported but a few vehicles parked near the area got damaged. "Efforts are being made to restore gas supply at the earliest. Restoration work of the pipeline has already started," GAIL said.
