Former Union Telecom minister and
DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran has alleged that the Central Bureau of Investigation
(CBI) is trying to implicate him by forcing his associates to give a statement
against him in the telephone exchange case.
The case is related to the
allegations that a virtual telephone-exchange was established at his residence
in order to enable data transfer that would benefit Sun TV group, a media house
owned by Maran's brother Kalanidhi Maran. A case has been registered by the CBI
against him and some BSNL officials regarding the illegitimate allocation of
over 300 high-speed telephone lines for the mentioned purpose.
Without naming the individual,
Maran said that an intellectual from Tamil Nadu wants to trap the DMK by misusing
his political powers. He said, "the CBI has threatened my associates that
they will be let go if they give a statement against me," a day after CBI
arrested three individuals, including Maran's former secretary.
He further added, "I have
written a letter to the CBI Director on the arrest of my associates."
Accusing the investigating agency of behaving like a harassment tool, he said, "CBI
should be fact finding bureau not a fixing bureau."
According to him the three people
arrested by the CBI were given the third degree treatment by the agency. He has
iterated that he will fight the case till the very end. “Is CBI trying to impress the RSS ideologue
from Tamil Nadu? The telephone line still functions in my residence....CBI
wants to pass the buck, I have no choice but to fight it out,” Maran
challenged.
Son of senior DMK leader Late
Murasoli Maran and grandnephew of DMK supremo M Karunanidhi, Dayanidhi Maran
met with the senior DMK leadership earlier.
