India defeated Pakistan by 76
runs to register its sixth consecutive victory over the arch rivals in World
Cups, and hence India's saga of undefeated supremacy over the neighbor
continues.
India won the toss and decided to
bat first. After losing the first wicket of Rohit Sharma cheaply, Dhawan and
Kohli stood their ground and compiled a 129 runs partnership. One more hundred
runs partnership came between Kohli and Raina after Dhawan got run out for 73.
Soon, Virat Kohli scored his 22nd century and put India in a commanding
situation. But when a score of 325 seemed an easy proposition, Indian batting collapsed
after the departure of Kohli and the Indian innings was concluded at exactly
300 runs.
Pakistan began its innings
somewhat like the Indians but wickets kept falling at regular and partnership
were hard to find. Apart from the 68 runs partnership between Haris Sohail (36) Ahmed Shehzad (26), no other batsmen could
manage a single 50 runs partnership. Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq was the highest
scorer for Pakistan with 76 against his name.
Mohammad Shami took 4 wickets for
35 runs and was complimented well by other two seamers Umesh Yadav and Mohit
Sharma, both took 2 wickets each. Ashwin and Jadeja were also pretty decent and
shared 1 wicket each between them.
Virat Kohli was adjudged man of
the match for his heroic 107 runs innings.
Pakistan till date has not been
able to defeat India in World Cups; the rivalry between the two nations started
way back in 1992 where Indian defeated Pakistan by 43 runs in Sydney,
Australia.
