Delhi High Court Refuses to Hang NItish Katara's Murderers, Makes Jail Term Tougher

The Delhi High Court has refused to award the capital punishment to the killers of Nitish Katara, a business executive and son of a railway officer. However, the Court has enhanced the punishment of all the three culprits Vikas Yadav, Vishal, and Sukhdev Pehelwan from life imprisonment to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment.

Katara was just 25 years old when he was burnt alive by the mentioned offenders in Ghaziabad near New Delhi for dating Bharti Yadav, daughter of D P Yadav, a liquor mafia turned politician. He was attending a wedding ceremony with Bharti when he was abducted by her brother Vikas Yadav and cousin Vishal.

Nitish Katara murder case

Katara's seriously burnt body was found a few days later. The body was burnt to such a degree that it could not be identified initially; the police had to use the DNA sample to confirm the dead body was Katara's.

During the trial Bharti refused to have any romantic relations with Katara whom she met at a business school and fell in love afterwards. Nitish Katara's mother Neelam fought a lengthy and hard legal battle against a politically and economically strong opponent - DP Yadav, who left no stone unturned in influencing the case.

In 2008, a Delhi court found them guilty of murdering Nitish Katara and awarded life imprisonment. Neelam Katara and Delhi Police took the case to the Delhi High Court and demanded that either they should be sentenced to capital punishment or their sentence be made tougher.
