Anil Goswami Submits His Resignation In The Wake Of His Alleged Attempt In Stalling The Arrest Of Matan Sinh

Home Secretary Anil Goswamy resigned yesterday after the government urged him to submit his resignation letter in the wake of his alleged effort to stall the arrest of Saradha scam accused Matang Sinh, a minister in the Narasimha Rao's government.

The sources are saying that Goswami was to complete his tenure that was ending on 30 June 2015; but the government asked him to submit his papers and he complied. It is reported that his resignation was his key to 'dignified' exit.

Rural Development Secretary LC Goyal, a 1979-batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre, is his replacement. Goyal has some experience of working in the home ministry where he served as a joint secretary in the ministry's internal security division from 2002 to 2007.

The news of Goswami's removal came following the media reports that he tries to dissuade the CBI from arresting Sinh on Saturday.

This is the second incident of removing a top-level bureaucrat in the past few days; Sujata Singh, the foreign secretary, was removed just days before the end of her tenure to get S Jaishankar on board.

It has been reported that the removal of Goswamy became a concrete certainty after he admitted to the Home Minister that he contacted a CBI official before the arrest of Sinh in Kolkata on Saturday.

The CBI was unhappy with Goswami for his interference in the arrest. It submitted a report to the PMO on this issue against Goswami and a joint director level officer of the CBI.

Rajnath Singh who returned to the capital on Tuesday talked to Goswamy regarding the issue, and after Goswamy accepted to have talked to the CBI authorities on this matter, the Home Minister briefed the PMO about this, and the deal was sealed for the former Home Secretary.

Goswami, 60, is a 78-batch IAS officer of J&K cadre, was appointed the Home Secretary by the Manmohan Singh cabinet in 2013.
