Dozens of people have been
detained by the Police in Delhi for protesting against the recent attacks on
the churches in the city. There have been five attacks on churches in Delhi in
the last couple of months.
Christian groups are alleging
that the BJP-led government at the center is not doing enough to keep the
extremist elements of the society at bay; hence the safety of the minority
communities is at a risk. The Delhi Police is denying the allegations, though.
Today's protest comes after a
church in the Vasant Kunj locality of Delhi was vandalized on Monday by some
unidentified elements.
Protesters gathered outside the
city's main Catholic Sacred Heart Cathedral in central Delhi. They were
carrying placards with slogans reading 'enough is enough, what are police
doing?'
Police informed that the
protesters were arrested because they were marching towards the residence of
the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh; protesters are not allowed in the
area.
Senior police officer MK Meena
told the reporters: "They have no permission to protest on the road. They
can't just march to the home minister's residence. We have to protect the homes
of VIPs.''
Father Jolly, one of the
protesters, said that the attacks on the churches are making the Christian
folks feel very 'unsafe' in the capital city.
"The prime minister is still silent on the issue. In the backdrop
of these attacks, he should come forward and issue a statement. He should give
us confidence."
The Delhi Police is saying that
it has provided security to more than 200 churches in the capital.
In the month of December last
year, a church was allegedly set on fire by some miscreants. Initially, the
police blamed faulty wiring for the incident, but after protests by the
Christian community, the filed a case against unidentified people.
