Sir Lanka Goes Into The Most Closely Fought Election In Years

Mahinda Rajapaksa is facing a stiff competition from Maithripala Sirisena, one of his former allies, in the general election that has been announced two years before time. Mr Rajapaksa is in the office since 2005.

Mr Rajapaksa road on a wave of popularity when the war with the LTTE ended on a triumphant note; but the fame did not last long and now a huge chunk of voters accuses him of cronyism. Many of the country's most powerful and lucrative posts are occupied by him kinsmen; many accuse him of running the country like a family business.

Sir Lanka Goes Into The Most Closely Fought Election In Years

His opposition, Sirisena seems to have capitalized on this premises and succeeded in getting a big chunk of Sinhalese vote share on his side. To make the scene worse, Sirisena is expected to win the major part of the ethnic minority vote share that constitute 30% of the total population.

But the fact cannot be denied that Rajapaksa is still the most famous politician in the country right now, at least in the Sinhalese community.

After exercising his franchise today, he said, “We will have a resounding victory. That is very clear. From tomorrow, we will start implementing our manifesto."

The pooling booths were opened at 7 in the morning, and the results will come out on Friday.

It should be noted that Sri Lanka is a country divided on the ethnic line and the war between the Prabhakaran led LTTE and the Sri Lanka Army with government backing, rendered thousands dead and millions displaced. The Army finally crushed the LTTE in the 2009, and Mahinda Rajapaksa basked in the victorious glory.

The West and the US have imposed economic sanctions on the country as they are accusing Mahinda Rajapaksa administration of serious war crimes.

Jitan Manjhi Makes Another Controversial Statement, Lays Support To Maoists Asking For Levy

Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi has created another stir by making a Maoist-friendly comment on Sunday. He said that there is nothing wrong in Maoists asking the contractors and businessmen for levy.

"There is nothing wrong if Maoists are demanding levy from contractors engaged in construction of roads, bridge and building and businessmen," said the veteran politician.

Jitan Ram Manjhi controversy

Further he recalled that some time ago he came in contact with three Maoists and asked them that why are they demanding levy from contractors and businessmen and arson their vehicles and other equipment if they don't comply with the demands. They told the CM that contractors and businessmen are looting the taxpayer's money by showing bills that are many times more than the actual money spent on their respective projects. Hence, the Maoists are looting the looters.

Jitan Manjhi said that if the contractors and businessmen are making money by illegal means, it is not wrong to demand levy from them. Maoists are doing the right thing.

The Bihar CM and  Nitish Kumar's trusted commander is not new to controversy. His comments on inter caste marriage, calling all the upper caste people outsiders, asking dalits to reproduce more, demanding the reservation levels to be raised to 80%; all of them have managed to create a lot of controversy.

Security Tightens UP After Hijack Threat At IGI Airport, New Delhi

The CISF, which looks after the security at the IGI has been asked to keep a strict vigil at every nook and corner of the airport. Delhi Police, which looks after the outer premises of the airport, has also been sent on high alert.

Intelligence agencies had given warning about a possible hijack by the terrorists of one on the flights going to Kabul, Afghanistan. The intelligence input specified that Air India flights might be the most possible victim.

TCS Terminates 1500, Employees To Start An Online Campaign Against The "Wrong Doing"

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has terminated around 1500 of its employees. The fired employees have decided to start an online campaign against the company's decision. A mass petition is being planned to be handed over to the PM Narendra Modi. Led by the Federation of IT Employees of Chennai, the fired employees are gearing up for a conspicuous protest.

Sources say that the firings have been brought about in order to bring in the reforms and cost-cutting. The timing of the decision is somewhat strange as the company has recorded a 17% growth in the first half of this fiscal year. The company has a global work force of over 300000 has fired 470 in Bengaluru, 700 in Hyderabad, 480 in Chennai, 70 in Pune, and 20 in Kochi.

TCS Terminates 1500 Employees

In the meanwhile, TCS has announced that it will hire around 55000 employees in the current fiscal year. TCS has an attrition rate of 12% that includes involuntary attrition.

The rumors are quite rife on various social platforms about the company planning to sack about 25000 'non-performing' employees by the end of this fiscal year itself. While TCS is not willing to accept the terminations as something extra ordinary.

Industry experts are seeing this incident as something that TCS is doing to bring in new talent which will not just bring new ideas with them, but the act will bring the expenses down considerably.

Coding is the basic skill that employees need in the IT companies, but that skill needs to be updated with time as new things keep coming all the time. And those who are not fast enough to catch up with these novelties are deemed as a financial liability to the company.

Unfortunately, the IT industry doesn't come under the Industrial Employment Act. Hence the IT professionals cannot do much about their being handed over the pink slip as they can't seek legal protection against their 'unjust firings'.

Reservation Will Not Do Any Good To The Minorities, Says Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptulla

Reservation Will Not Do Any Good To The Minorities, Says Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptulla

Najma Heptulla, Union Minister for Minority Affairs has said that the reservation in jobs and educational institutions will not the better the condition of the minorities in the country. She was in Mumbai toady to oversee the functioning and activities of the National Minority Development and Financial Corporation (NMDFC) and the Maulana Azad National Academy for Skills (MANAS); both the organizations are being expanded all across the country.

She told the media, "There cannot be overall development of Muslims even if they are given a reservation. What is needed is higher and good-quality education for our children so that they can stand on their feet."

It should be noted that the BJP-Shiv Sena led government in Maharashtra has passed a bill that gives reservation to the Marathas but excludes the Muslims. It is somewhat averse to the ordinance that was issued by the previous Congress-NCP government that gave reservation to both the communities.

"How long Muslims will walk with the help of crutches of reservation? Once children are provided with good education, they will be able to stand up on their feet and will get jobs in multinational companies," she further said. "I have not come up to this level because I am a Muslim or a woman, but because my parents gave me access to education."

On being asked whether she would be averse to the reservation given to the Marathas, she refused to comment. Instead she said, "I just want to say that people should be made capable of achieving their dreams on their own instead of looking for jobs based on reservation. The previous Congress-NCP government decided to give reservation to Muslims and Marathas as a last-ditch attempt to save themselves after the drubbing in Lok Sabha elections."

Her views on the reservation seem to have drawn the ire of the minority leaders that are adamant on having their 'share'.

Second cousin of actor Amir Khan, Najma Heptulla, 74, is the grand-niece of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. She joined the BJP in 2004 after being a lifelong member of the Congress party. In August 2014 her controversial statement that "there is nothing wrong in calling all the Indians Hindus," brought severe criticism from various quarters.

Pak Fishing Boat Carrying Explosives Blows Itself Up On the Eve Of New Year Near Gujrat Coast

Until now no survivors have been reported from the boat which was coming from Karachi, Pakistan. The government has described the incident as an illicit transaction in the Arabian Sea waters. According to the sources, the boat had explosive meant to be transported to another boat about 350 kilometers southwest of Porbandar in Gujrat.

Pak Fishing Boat Carrying Explosives Blows Itself Up On the Eve Of New Year

No further information was provided in the statement issued by the government that said, "Coast Guard Intercepts Suspect Boat Carrying Explosives in Arabian Sea." The amount or the nature of the explosive was not explained in the same.

The statement explained that on the morning of the 31st December a phone call was intercepted from Keti Bunder near Karachi in which a "expensive cargo" was discussed that was supposed to be delivered near India. The India navy took cognizance of the same and got alerted; coast guard ships and aircraft were sent vigil.

"The boat increased speed and tried to escape away from the Indian side of maritime boundary. The hot pursuit continued for nearly one hour," the statement said.

The boat had to stop after the warning shots were fired by the Coast Guards in a chase that lasted around one hour. The four member crew then hid themselves under the deck and set the vessel ablaze that eventually caused the explosion.

Deputy Director General of Operations of the Indian Coast Guard, KR Nautiyal said, "The boat was cornered by our team, but it continued sending signals of non-compliance. We followed all protocol to send warnings to the boat."

This suspicious incident brings back the horrible memories of 26/11 attack on Mumbai that shook the entire nation. The gory attack rendered 166 dead and several others injured, including foreign nationals.
